Betas, Take Two

Beta hcg: 1968
at 17 DPO

Progesterone wasn't repeated because it was fine at the previous check.

The office said that they would now schedule me for an ultrasound to make sure the pregnancy isn't ectopic - this is their routine procedure. But my fertility clinic said they don't do an u/s until 7-8 weeks. Everything I'm having done here is out of pocket...what do you guys think? Is this 5 week u/s necessary or a good idea? My parents are willing to pay for everything, but I think I'd rather save that money, as future baby expenses are suddenly closer than I had imagined!

I feel...in shock. As I did last Sunday morning, when that second line showed up. After the positive pee-stick, I was thrilled, but cautious. After Tuesday's betas, I was relieved, but still waiting. Now...it's real! And I can hardly believe it...

I've spent so long learning how to get pregnant, that I pushed the idea of being pregnant far out of my mind. Yesterday I was asking DH to see if he could find the pregnancy workout DVDs I bought...last January - yes, January 2007. You see, in the beginning, I thought about pregnancy and labor and babies and raising kids all the time, because, of course, I was about to become a mom the day we started TTC-ing! When it didn't happen, and failure was repeatedly followed by failure, a year and a half later, I had completely pushed out all thoughts of pregnancy, let alone babies and child-rearing.

All this week, I've just kind of pretended like nothing was happening. I tried to avoid sushi, but then all my friends became suspicious, so I went with them anyway and had a cooked roll (then immediately felt guilty about the teeny, tiny, minute possiblity of cross-contamination). But other than that, unlike the old me, I haven't been reading and googling every single thing about pregnancy...because I just wasn't ready to believe until now.

I'm still cautious, because I know anything can happen, and the risk of miscarriage is still pretty high until 12 weeks, but I can no longer pretend like I'm not sure that I'm pregnant. Because for now, I am...that p word that I can't even imagine I'm saying in reference to me! I'm pregnant, thanks be to God.

I'd wait for the 8 week. It's only 3 weeks.

I personally would wait for the 8 week scan and not go in for the 5 week one ESPECIALLY if it is out of pocket expense. 8 weeks you'll definitely be able to see the heartbeat(s) too.

I sure dont know much, but I would wait the couple weeks too.

Congrats! those are some great Beta #'s

Congratulations! I know little about the process and when is best for the Ultra Sound -- but think about what will give you a piece of mind -- I know three weeks is a long wait for me but on the flip side I am sure it is a lot of money! Good luck.

Those are beautiful betas. If you think you can wait for the u/s, I'd go ahead and wait it out, but as Amy mentioned, think about what would give you peace of mind. If you're worried (which it doesn't sound like you are), then I'd go ahead and do the u/s now. Did the office say they were concerned about ectopic, or were they just offering?

Hooray!

YEAH!!!

Sorry - no insight on the u/s. I'll defer to others. BUT I'm so excited to see this Beta #!!!

Congrats.

yay PG!!! If you can wait then do it! But the suspense is killing me and I can barely wait for my 7 week one, I would like a 5 week one, but mine are covered, so that makes a huge difference! You know whats best though, so do that!

Nothing will show at 5 weeks! It's too little...

YAAAY what a surreal feeling!!! I am SO happy you're pregnant! It's the greatest craziest feeling!!

I have to disagree with most of the posters...get the 5 week scan. They will see a sac wherever it is. Something can be seen when your beta level reaches 1500 and you're there.

Trust me, you do NOT want an ectopic pg...I had a double myself, one in each tube at the same time.

If you do have an ectopic and wait until 8 weeks, your tube could rupture, you would have internal bleeding, and you would probably lose the tube. Ruptured ectopic is a medical emergency requiring surgery and can be life threatening.

I'd get the u/s just to be safe.

Thinking of you!

wait until 8 wks. I had the 5 week one and you really can't see anything besides a sak. I know it sucks waiting, but the 8 week one is definitly worth saving a little extra money. I am glad to see your having a good week back home!! Can't wait to talk to you soon about all the details.

Great number! Congrats on your pregnancy.

As for the u/s, I would definitely wait until 8 weeks. There's so little to see at 5/6 weeks.

Oh, that's a hard one.

Numbers looking great though. I would scan right away, if I could. :)

Whatever will give you peace of mind is what you should do. If you will be okay until 8 weeks, than save that money but if not, go ahead and have it.

You're pregnant!! Yay! I'll say it if you can't. :)
